Is Your Appliance Worth Repairing? A Practical Framework
Not every faulty appliance should be repaired at any cost. Here is a practical way to think through the decision once the fault has been diagnosed.
Most washing machine problems fall into a handful of recognisable categories. Knowing roughly what is going on before the technician arrives will not fix the appliance, but it does help you describe the fault accurately — which makes diagnosis faster.
A machine that leaves standing water at the end of a cycle is one of the most common calls. Possible causes range from a blocked filter or drain hose (a relatively simple fix) through to a failed drain pump or a faulty control board (a more involved repair). This is exactly why the same symptom cannot be diagnosed over the phone with any accuracy.
This is often assumed to be a motor fault, but a machine that will not spin can just as easily have a drainage problem (many machines will not spin with standing water still inside) or a door-lock fault that is preventing the spin cycle from starting at all.
Leaks can come from a door seal, a hose connection, a detergent drawer, or less obviously, from a cracked component inside the machine. Where the water is actually coming from — front, back, underneath, during which part of the cycle — is useful information to note before booking a repair.
Modern washing machines use sensors and electronic controls to monitor water level, door locking, motor load and more. An error code is the machine reporting that one of these checks has failed — the code itself is a useful starting point for diagnosis, but it is not always a direct pointer to the failed part.
Note the brand and model number, whether an error code is showing, roughly when in the cycle the fault occurs, and whether it happens every time or intermittently. That information, along with a photo of the model label where possible, gives the technician useful context before the visit.
